Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions people ask before starting counselling. I hope these answers make it easier for you to decide if this feels right for you.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Many people wonder if their struggles are “serious enough” for counselling. The truth is, you don’t need to wait until things feel overwhelming. Therapy can help if you:

  • feel stuck in repeating patterns,

  • struggle with anxiety, sadness, or stress,

  • find it hard to make decisions,

  • or simply want space to reflect and grow.

Think of therapy not only as a way to heal difficulties, but also as an opportunity for self-discovery and building a more fulfilling life.

Why should I pay for therapy if I can talk to a friend?

Talking to a supportive friend is valuable, but therapy is different:

  • A counsellor is trained to listen without judgment, to notice what’s behind your words, and to gently challenge patterns that may hold you back.

  • Friends may have their own opinions or advice; therapy is focused entirely on you and what you need.

  • Sessions provide a safe, confidential space where you can share anything without worrying about the impact on your relationships.

Investing in therapy is an investment in yourself — your wellbeing, clarity, and growth.

What if therapy makes me feel worse?

Sometimes, when we begin to talk about painful or hidden feelings, things can feel heavier before they get lighter. This is a natural part of the healing process. We will move at your pace, and you are always in control of what you share. With support and care, those difficult emotions usually become easier to understand and manage.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. You can share what brings you to counselling, and I will explain how I work. Together, we decide whether my approach feels right for you. There is no obligation to continue if it doesn’t feel like a good fit.

How long does counselling take?

Each session lasts 60 minutes. The number of sessions varies — some people benefit from short-term support (6–8 sessions), while others choose longer-term work. We review regularly to see what suits your needs.

Is counselling covered by insurance?

Some health insurers reimburse counselling under “Alternative care”. Please check with your provider. I can provide an invoice for reimbursement.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Everything you share is treated with strict confidentiality, according to professional and ethical guidelines (NIP / BPS). Exceptions apply only if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others.

Are online sessions effective?

Yes. Research shows that online counselling can be just as effective as in-person sessions for most issues. Many of my clients appreciate the comfort and flexibility of connecting from their own space. I use secure video platforms to ensure confidentiality, and the focus and connection we create online is often just as strong as when we meet in person.
